Writers find inspiration in many different places. For some, inspiration comes as they sit with a pen and paper (or, more likely, laptop or tablet) and brainstorm ideas. For others, it may come in the shower. Others may find inspiration in watching TV shows or movies or reading books in the genre they write. I’ve done all of these and more!
This past weekend, I went on a camping trip for Labor Day. The campsite was a neat two-and-a-half hour drive away, through the winding roads and mountains of Arkansas. And when we reached our destination, we were in a beautiful, wooded lake campsite. That night, we sat on the ground outside the tent and looked up at the stars, and there were more than I can ever remember seeing before! I don’t know what it was exactly, but something about the drive, the location, and everything, it all sparked an exciting new story idea in my head that I began formulating.
God has shown us all kinds of examples of His creativity; the water, the sky, the trees, the stars, the animals…God is the most creative being in the universe, and it’s a blessing to be able to emulate Him in that way by showing our own creativity. And God is a storyteller, too. Look over the Bible and you’ll see that all of time has been a masterful narrative that He has weaved exactly as He wanted. Even the things that humankind did against His will, He still used to put His story together.
So next time a writer’s block comes, maybe the world around us holds the answer. God has given us all the inspiration we need. We just have to look for it.
